Tea tree oil belongs in a careful, targeted skin-care routine—not on every irritated spot. We recommend keeping it away from your eyes, inside your ears and nose, your mouth, and genital areas. Never swallow it. Even when you use it on skin, dilute it first and avoid applying it to open or badly irritated areas.
Do not put tea tree oil on your eyelids or close to your lash line, where it could get into your eyes. Keep it off your lips and away from the inside of your mouth, nose, and ears. Do not use it on genital skin or other mucous membranes. These areas are especially sensitive, and a product intended for external skin use is not a good substitute for care designed for them.
Do not apply tea tree oil to cuts, popped pimples, raw patches, sunburn, or skin that is already stinging or peeling. If you are treating blemishes, apply a properly diluted product only to intact skin. Our tea tree oil checklist for clearer, calmer skin offers more guidance for working it into a simple routine.
Store the bottle where children and pets cannot reach it, and do not use it on a pet’s skin or fur. Tea tree oil can be harmful if swallowed. If you suspect a person has swallowed it, contact Poison Control or seek urgent medical advice; if a pet has been exposed, contact a veterinarian promptly.
Undiluted tea tree essential oil can cause irritation or an allergic reaction. Choose a skin-care product formulated with tea tree oil, or dilute the essential oil in a suitable carrier oil before applying it. Test a small area first, follow the product’s directions, and stop using it if you develop redness, itching, swelling, or burning. If you have eczema, very sensitive skin, or a persistent skin problem, ask a health care professional before adding it to your routine. Our goal is to help you use tea tree oil where it fits—not push through irritation.
We recommend against putting undiluted tea tree essential oil directly on a pimple. Use a properly diluted product on intact skin, keep it away from your eyes and lips, and stop if it irritates you.
